In the first chapter of the second letter of Peter, there is a list of character qualities mentioned. There is some overlap with the list of Fruits of the Spirit in Galatians chapter 5, but Peter writes that we should “give all diligence”, that is, we need to do our part, to add them.
“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.”
– 2 Peter 1:5-7
This suggests that, while God is working in our spirits to change us internally, we can’t lie back and wait for it to happen. We must still do what we can.
As Spurgeon said, “God gives you faith, but you must believe. God gives you repentance, but you must repent.”
